Key takeaways

  • Having private health cover as you get older can support your health journey and provide value for money.
  • You can choose your hospital and specialist and reduce the amount of time you need to wait for surgery.
  • Health insurance in your 50s, 60s and beyond may also help you manage conditions like diabetes and osteoarthritis, and provides access to joint health programs and other services like dental checks.

As you get older, new health priorities and challenges can emerge. Here’s how private health cover can support your wellbeing and provide value for money.

Life in your 50s, 60s and beyond looks different for everyone – you could be partnered or single, have younger children or older children and grandchildren. You might be working full-time, part-time or be retired.

Whether you feel as energetic as you did at 25 or you’re managing health conditions, it's important to make sure you have the right level of cover for your health needs.

Being proactive about private health cover can support your health journey, and provide more value for money along the way.

The benefits of health cover in your 50s and beyond

Medicare can help with some of your over-50 healthcare needs, including some of the costs of seeing a GP or specialist, as well as treatment and stays in public hospitals. But public hospitals can have long waiting lists for elective surgeries, and you don’t always get to choose who treats you and where. For example, 50% of people wait more than 106 days for cataract surgery and 255 days for a knee replacement in a public hospital.

With private health cover, you can choose your hospital and specialist and reduce the wait time for surgery. Private cover can also provide support for managing conditions like diabetes and osteoarthritis, as well as access to joint health programs and other services like dental checks.

Your health cover can also help in the event of an emergency. Ambulance services are covered by governments in some states and territories but not others, so it’s worth checking if you need cover to avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs.

How to find the right over-50s health insurance

Know the level of cover you need

Even if you already have cover, it’s a good idea to review it regularly, and after major life changes like retirement or the loss of a partner, to make sure it still meets your needs. While it can be tempting to reduce or drop your cover, it’s important to consider your options carefully before making changes, as you may need cover for procedures like joint replacements or other age-related conditions down the track.

Decide whether to include extras

Extras cover can help you stay on top of your health, giving you access to services like dental check-ups and physio appointments, as well as support for mental health and weight management. Regular check-ups are important, because they can help you catch any issues early, and avoid stressful – and potentially expensive – treatments down the track.

Understand waiting periods

When you sign up for private cover, it’s helpful to remember that waiting periods must be served before you can claim for a service, and there are waiting periods for both hospital and extras services. If you have a pre-existing condition, you may have a 12-month waiting period before you’re eligible for any benefits for hospital treatment. Maintaining private health cover will help you avoid re-serving waiting periods.

Factor in annual extras limits

Most extras services have a maximum amount you can claim each year. These annual limits reset on 1 January each year. Your cover might also include sub-limits for specific services. Making the most of your extras cover before it resets each year helps you save money on health services.

Choose your hospital excess

Your excess – a non-refundable amount of money you pay towards the cost of your hospital treatment – can range from $0 up to $750 for singles and $1,500 for families. You might consider choosing a higher excess if you want a lower premium. A lower excess might be a better choice if you have pre-existing health conditions or have a history of hospital visits.

Pre-existing conditions

As you get older, waiting periods for pre-existing conditions can be a concern when you take out private health cover. For new members or members who are upgrading their cover to a higher level, it could mean waiting for up to 12 months before you can claim any benefits.

A pre-existing condition is any ailment, illness or condition you had or experienced signs or symptoms of within the six months before you took out health cover. It can range from minor issues like allergies to more serious illnesses like cancer or heart disease.

Having a pre-existing condition doesn’t mean you should dismiss private health cover as an option. After you've served your waiting periods, your health cover can still provide significant benefits for your overall health and wellbeing, like access to programs and services to keep you healthy and more choices of specialists and hospitals.

Myths about private health cover

Myth: Medicare will cover you for most things.

Medicare doesn’t generally cover the cost of ambulances or items like glasses, contact lenses and hearing aids. Private health cover can fill the gaps in Medicare’s coverage and give you more choice about your treatment.

Myth: You don’t need health cover unless you have a chronic health condition.

Even if you’re generally healthy, private cover can give you more choice about when and where you get treatment if you need it.

Myth: You don’t need private health cover if you live in aged care.

If you're moving into aged care, you may still benefit from holding on to your private health cover. You might want to review your level and type of cover to allow for your new circumstances and make sure you’re not paying for cover you don’t need.

While some of your healthcare needs may be taken care of by your aged care facility, private cover can still be useful for services like elective surgeries and essentials like new glasses, hearing aids or dental care. It can help if you talk to your facility or ask your family to help with those discussions about what the facility does and doesn’t cover, so you have a clear picture of the gaps you need to fill.
