Discover how HCF private health insurance can help support you through treatment, recovery and the medical expenses that come with a serious diagnosis.
A serious medical diagnosis like cancer can turn everyday life upside down, leading to worry about the treatment you need and what happens next.
Alongside concerns about your diagnosis are often practical questions about medical expenses – especially given the high cost of living that’s putting many households under pressure.
HCF member Jackie experienced this firsthand when she and her mother were arranging end-of-life care for her father through the private health system. “When my family was going through an incredibly difficult time, we didn’t need more stress,” she says. “We needed clarity, kindness and support.”
This is where private health insurance comes in. If you’ve been given a life-changing diagnosis like cancer or heart disease, or need treatments to help you improve your quality of life, like cataract surgery or dental work, private cover can help you manage the costs of getting treatment through a private hospital which can give you access to timely treatment and support.
Types of treatments that can have a big impact
From cancer care to major surgery and dental work, many treatments involve specialist care and lengthy recovery periods. Access can also be a challenge, with public hospital waiting lists often stretching for months.
Cancer treatment
Cancer treatment often involves surgery or other therapies. Costs can accumulate over time, along with indirect expenses like travel, accommodation and lost income during treatment and recovery. Long waiting periods for treatment can add to the financial and emotional strain of a cancer diagnosis.
Brain and nervous system conditions
Conditions affecting the brain, spine and nerves – like Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, stroke and head injuries – can require complex, long-term care. Treatment may involve surgery, rehabilitation and ongoing allied health support, with costs often continuing well beyond the initial diagnosis.
Heart procedures
Heart conditions can require urgent treatment or planned procedures like stent insertion, valve replacement or bypass surgery.
Digestive and gastrointestinal conditions
Digestive and gastrointestinal conditions – ranging from chronic disorders like irritable bowel syndrome to gallstones, haemorrhoids and cancers affecting the digestive system – may require surgery.
Dental procedures
Complex dental treatments like root canals, crowns and implants can be expensive, particularly if you don’t qualify for public dental services. Even for those who do, waiting times can stretch beyond a year. Having private health cover can make dental care more accessible, with Australians who have dental cover less likely to delay or avoid treatment due to cost.
HCF’s growing network of More for Teeth providers makes it easy to avoid out-of-pocket costs on dental care. Eligible members who visit a provider in our network, including HCF Dental Centres, can get 100% back* on services like check-ups, cleans and mouthguards every year.
Joint surgeries
Joint replacement surgery can improve mobility and quality of life, but recovery may take months and often includes rehabilitation and physiotherapy.
While the cost of a knee and hip replacement in a public hospital may be lower than a private hospital, public hospital surgery waiting times are often the trade-off. In FY 2024–25, the median wait time for public hospital patients needing total knee replacement or total hip replacement surgery was 255 days and 130 days respectively.
Cataract surgery
Cataract surgery is a common procedure that can dramatically improve vision. While recovery is usually straightforward, access through the public system may involve extended waiting periods (106 days was the median wait time in FY 2024–25).

How HCF can help
From access to private hospitals and specialists to lower out-of-pocket costs, the right private health cover can give you greater choice and flexibility during your treatment and recovery.
Find a participating hospital
With hospital cover, you’ll get access to private hospitals for treatments and surgeries, as well as help with paying for those services. In most cases, you’ll be able to choose your doctor and hospital for your treatment and enjoy reduced waiting times for elective surgeries.
HCF members can avoid out-of-pocket costs by going to an HCF-participating hospital, which you can check with our Find a Participating Hospital tool. Last financial year, members paid nothing or a maximum of $500 for 97%^ of medical services received in hospital, through our network.
You can also use our cost indicator tool to get an idea of typical out-of-pocket costs for common hospital procedures and help you plan ahead.
Higher levels of hospital cover typically include a broader range of treatments, including more complex medical procedures. It’s important to contact us to make sure you’re covered for different procedures, and to regularly review your cover to make sure it still meets your needs.
Pay less for the services you use
Extras cover helps you lower the costs of health services generally not covered by Medicare, including dental, physio and optical, which can be especially helpful if you’re managing or recovering from a serious condition.
Choose My Extras allows you to select and swap+ your extras services as your needs change, so you only pay for what you intend to use (as long as no-one on the policy has claimed on them during the year).
Flex My Extras offers basic extras cover for singles and couples with a flexible single limit that can be used on any covered service#, plus an additional optical limit and remedial massage limit.
Access a network of specialists
Our handy Find a Provider tool can help you find a specialist for your hospital treatment who charges no gap or a known gap (capped at $500 per procedure) between their fees and what Medicare covers. There’s no obligation to use HCF’s network if you prefer a particular doctor or practitioner, but choosing a provider outside the network may result in higher out-of-pocket fees for treatment they provide while in hospital.
Keep joint replacement costs down
Our No-Gap Joints program for primary hip and knee replacements gives eligible members peace of mind, with no out-of-pocket costs from hospital admission through to discharge and post-surgery rehab**. We've partnered with private hospitals and clinicians in NSW, Vic and SA to give greater flexibility and continuity of care while keeping medical expenses down.
Stay financially protected while you recover
Health cover helps take care of your medical expenses, but sometimes the costs continue even after you leave the hospital. Recover Cover^^ is a collection of life and recovery products to help with the unexpected costs that come with getting back on your feet after illness or injury, including Income Protect Insurance, Personal Accident Insurance and Kids’ Accident Cover^^. It gives you quick cash to use for expenses like taxis to the doctor, extra rehab, babysitters or help if you need time off work. Designed to complement your private health cover, it can provide additional financial support when you need it most.
Get support in the home
We want to make it convenient and safe for you to get the care you need, so we’ve chosen to pay for some treatments in the comfort of your own home for eligible members++. Our network of contracted providers allows us to cover the cost of the treatment at home for intravenous (IV) therapy antibiotics, complex wound care with negative pressure wound therapy, rehabilitation after a hip or knee replacement and IV chemotherapy.
Ruby and Diamond members can also access support like our nurse concierge service: a phone-based program to help you manage your recovery from the comfort of home after hospital treatment.
Plus, HCF health cover can support your wellbeing in many other ways, from joint health, heart health and diabetes programs to digital tools that help you manage your health.
Reduce stress when it matters most
No-one plans for a major health issue, but being prepared can make a meaningful difference if you need complex care. Private health cover can provide practical support and peace of mind at a time when decisions may feel overwhelming – just as it did for Jackie, who was grateful for the support she received from her local HCF Branch Manager, Bec Simmons, while navigating her father’s care.
“Walking away, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted,” she says. “We knew we’d made the right decisions, and that someone was truly looking out for our best interests – not profit.”
Chatting with HCF early on can help you understand your options and access support when you need it.
