Aftercare

After egg retrieval, you need to wait for the sedation to wear off before you can be taken home. You may be able to return to work if you’re feeling okay but you won’t be able to drive.

After embryo transfer, your doctor may encourage you to rest at home for several hours.

Be prepared for the emotional challenge of a failed IVF cycle. This can place a lot of strain on your relationship. Talking to other people who’ve been through it and joining a support community can help.

Watching out for problems

Call your fertility specialist immediately if you have:

  • fever or chills
  • heavy bleeding or unusual vaginal discharge
  • severe pain
  • shortness of breath
  • abdominal bloating and increased waist size
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • pain in your lower abdomen
  • pains in your legs.
