Travel insurance helps protect you from unexpected costs that can arise when things don’t go to plan. If you’re travelling overseas, it’s especially important because unexpected medical bills and hospitalisation can be expensive, and your Australian health cover may not cover you internationally. Travel insurance can also help cover expenses like unexpected trip cancellations, significant flight delays or the replacement of lost or stolen luggage*.

Even when travelling within Australia, you can get travel insurance to cover things like trip cancellations##, flight delays*, lost baggage* or a rental vehicle excess, although medical expenses aren’t included under our Domestic Travel Insurance policy.

For full details of HCF Travel Insurance inclusions and exclusions, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement.

No. Whether you’re travelling overseas or domestically, you must purchase our travel insurance before you start your journey to be covered. Your journey starts when any traveller named on the Certificate of Insurance leaves home or work in Australia to commence travel.

You can make a claim online while on your trip or upon your return to Australia through our online claims portal.

You’ll need to:

  • have your policy number and personal details ready
  • provide any receipts, medical records, police records or your travel itinerary if we ask for those.

If you’re in Australia and need assistance with your claim, call our claims team on 1800 689 410 (Weekdays 8am-7pm AEST/AEDT). For 24/7 emergency assistance call +61 7 3305 7499 (overseas) or 1800 010 075 (within Australia).

Please note additional charges may apply for any calls made from mobiles, public telephones or hotel rooms.

It’s up to you when you purchase travel insurance, but it’s important to keep these three things in mind:

  1. You can purchase HCF Travel Insurance up to 12 months in advance.
  2. You must purchase HCF Travel Insurance before you start your journey. Your journey starts when any traveller named on the Certificate of Insurance leaves home or work in Australia to commence travel.
  3. Depending on the plan you choose you may have trip cancellation cover, which is designed to cover unexpected trip cancellation, rescheduling or shortening from the date your Certificate of Insurance is issued. So, consider purchasing our travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked and paid for your trip as you may be covered for such events before you depart.

No. Children and dependants don’t need their own travel insurance policy if they’re travelling with you on the same itinerary, are listed on your policy and shown on your Certificate of Insurance. To be included under your family travel insurance policy, children/dependants must be:

  • your child or grandchild (including stepchild, adopted child, foster child and child you care for under a legal guardian arrangement)
  • aged under 25 years at the time of issue of your Certificate of Insurance
  • not employed full-time
  • accompanying you for 100% of the journey.

HCF Travel Insurance allows you to insure up to 10 dependants under your policy, provided they meet the above criteria, are listed on the policy and on your Certificate of Insurance.

Yes, though there are exceptions, and you must complete a medical assessment before obtaining cover. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you can apply to include cover under your policy for your pre-existing medical condition(s) at the time of purchasing an eligible policy. Alternatively, you can call our contact centre and they can step you through the medical assessment over the phone. Call us on 1800 689 410 (Weekdays 8am-7pm AEST, Saturday 8am-5pm AEST). Unless we agree to provide cover for a pre-existing medical condition, claims arising from the condition will generally be excluded.
