Medical treatment in Australia can be expensive if you can’t access Medicare (the Australian public healthcare system). Hospital cover may help to reduce high out-of-pocket costs for hospital treatments included in your cover, and most hospital cover will also cover things like emergency ambulance services and visits to the doctor.
Depending on the level of cover you choose, you may be able to claim for:
You may still have some out-of-pocket costs you need to pay, and you may not be covered for a pre-existing condition+ (or have a 12-month waiting period).
If you choose hospital and extras cover, also known as packaged cover, you’ll get a higher level of coverage than just hospital cover. Along with hospital cover, which includes some hospital treatments and may cover things like emergency ambulance services and visits to the doctor, you can also claim on a range of everyday services, or extras, that can help you look after your health (if you have Top or Top Plus OVHC).
Depending on the level of cover you choose, you may be able to claim for:
You may still have some out-of-pocket costs you need to pay, and you may not be covered for a pre-existing condition+ (or have a 12-month waiting period).

The test applied relies on the presence of signs or symptoms of the illness, ailment or condition; not on a diagnosis.
