Tests and imaging
Before surgery you may need to have some tests including blood and urine tests. If any issues are raised by your tests, your surgeon may have to postpone or cancel your surgery.
Medications
Your surgeon may prescribe a laxative to take in the days leading up to your admission. This will help to ensure that your bowel is empty on the day of your operation, and will help make your first bowel movements afterwards easier.
Your surgeon may ask you to stop taking certain medications (especially blood thinners) before your surgery. If you smoke or drink alcohol, ask your surgeon whether you should abstain from these before your surgery.
Don’t forget to mention any complementary or herbal remedies you’re taking.
