Staging ofinternal haemorrhoids

Your treatment options for internal haemorrhoids depend on the severity of the haemorrhoids

Internal haemorrhoids are graded into 4 different categories, with a number of treatment alternatives for each category:

Grade 1. Bulges into the anal canal during a bowel movement.

  • Main treatments: dietary change including increased fibre intake and/or medication to relieve symptoms. If they persist, your surgeon may recommend injections, coagulation or rubber band ligation.

Grade 2. Bulges out through the anal canal during a bowel movement but then goes back in by itself.

  • Main treatments: Injections, coagulation or rubber band ligation.

Grade 3. Bulges out through the anal canal during a bowel movement and doesn’t go back in but you can push it back in with a finger.

  • Main treatments: rubber band ligation, THD, stapling or haemorrhoidectomy.

Grade 4. Bulges out through the anal canal and can’t be pushed back in. It’s very painful and could become thrombosed (formed a blood clot).

  • Main treatments: THD, stapling or haemorrhoidectomy
