HCF wins CANSTAR CANNEX’s national award for outstanding value in private health insurance

Sydney, Monday 12 October 2009 – Australia’s third-largest private health insurer, not-for-profit HCF, has been awarded CANSTAR CANNEX’s national five-star rating for its Hospital Cover and Package Cover health insurance products.

The prestigious CANSTAR CANNEX award reviewed and rated more than 10,000 quotes for 1,500 private health insurance products, measured across all states and territories and against eight profiles including young singles, young families or couples, established families, young single parents, mature singles and mature couples.

HCF’s Group Manager for Marketing, Phil Soden, said the five-star rating reflected how not-for-profit HCF developed health insurance products for their customers’ needs at different stages of their lives, at prices that represented outstanding value.

“HCF is delighted to have been recognised for its value. This is extremely important to us, particularly in the current economic climate where people are more cautious about how they spend their dollars,” he said.

As well as receiving the prestigious national accolade, HCF was recognised in several state categories, winning outstanding value Hospital Cover in NSW, ACT and Tasmania, and outstanding value Package Cover in NSW, ACT, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. CANSTAR CANNEX State award winners are detailed in the table below.

CANSTAR CANNEX Head of Research, Steve Mickenbecker, said: “After an exhaustive comparison, we found there were three funds that could not be separated – HCF, MBF and Medibank Private.

“HCF was awarded outstanding value nationally for their overall health insurance products offered in hospital and package cover. It was clear to us that they were more consistent across the board, and stand out for the broad and deep value offered to consumers,” he said.

HCF currently provides private health insurance coverage to more than 1.3 million Australians, and has a market share close to 10% of the Australian health insurance market.

In August HCF launched My Health Guardian, a personalised phone and Internet-based health and wellbeing management service for its members. As the first program of its type in Australia, My Health Guardian offers comprehensive advice and support for people wanting to lead healthier lifestyles, and phone-based support from trained nurses for members living with a range of different chronic conditions.
