Savings on health insurance for La Trobe employees
As a La Trobe employee, you will receive significantly lower premiums on your health insurance. Plus, your payments can be conveniently deducted from your pay each fortnight.

A refundable excess
With each of HCF's Hospital products, most people usually pay an excess of $250 per calendar year.
With HCF the excess is waived for same day procedures, admissions resulting from an accident, and hospital admissions for children. Saving you money.
La Trobe is also helping you save. It has set up a fund, known as the Excess Refund Pool, to pay this excess for you.
How the La Trobe Excess Refund Pool works
If you or your partner are admitted into hospital, you pay the excess at the time you are admitted. To receive your refund from La Trobe, you then submit a completed La Trobe claim form to HR, along with your receipt and a photocopy of your HCF membership card. HR will then credit your nominated payroll bank account with the excess reimbursement. It's as simple as that.
Further financial protection with HCF's Medical Trauma Insurance
You can also choose to extend HCF health cover with HCF's Medical Trauma Insurance.
It is a low-cost way of arranging tax-free lump-sum benefits of either $20,000 or $40,000 in the event of an illness such as cancer, a heart attack or stroke. Click here for product details.

Save on premiums and receive a refund for HCF's Hospital excess.
Receive immediate cover on most services. On joining HCF, if you take out a Hospital and Extras cover, you receive immediate cover on all services usually requiring 2-6 months waiting periods. This includes hospital, general dental, physiotherapy and chiropractic services. This waiver does not apply to waiting periods of more than 6 months, including 12 months for obstetric services, major dental or pre-existing ailments or conditions. Psychiatric, rehabilitation and palliative care services, which have a 2 month waiting period, are also excluded from this offer.
Receive full continuity of cover if you transfer to HCF from another registered private health insurer at an equivalent level of cover, including orthodontics.
Have your premiums conveniently deducted automatically from your pay.
Receive the federal government 30% rebate on private health insurance which further reduces your premiums from the day you join (35% for members aged 65-69, 40% for those aged 70 and over).
Save on tax - no Medicare levy surcharge. If you're earning more than $73,000 per annum as a single (or over $146,000 as a family/couple) and don't have health insurance, you're charged an additional 1% on top of the current 1.5% government Medicare levy surcharge. So save on tax by taking out HCF Hospital cover today.
Avoid Lifetime Health Cover penalties (by joining by the age of 31). From 1 July following your 31st birthday, a person pays 2% more each year they are without Hospital cover (whether single or on behalf of a family).
Receive 100% Ambulance Cover Australia-wide included in all HCF Hospital covers (State Government services only), excluding Queensland and Tasmania. Queensland and Tasmanian residents are covered under their state ambulance schemes.
If you cease employment with La Trobe your HCF benefits and premiums will remain unchanged although will no longer receive a hospital excess refund.

The savings to you
La Trobe's Excess Refund Pool will pay for your hospital excess if you go to hospital and need to make a claim. This means additional savings on your premium as you are able to take a package containing any of our Hospital cover options with an excess, but in effect you'll be paying for a nil excess Hospital product because of the Excess Refund Pool arrangement.
With our premium Top Plus Hospital product, this means that your total premium saving equates to 12.2% - see below. You'll also make savings through the Excess Subsidy with our Hospital Savings and Hospital Advanced Savings products.
